On Tuesday, January 23, the Southeastern New England Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA/SENE) held its annual meeting at the Skyline at Waterplace in Providence. Chapter President Sarah Dell recapped the 2017 year, announced the 2018 Board of Directors, and transitioned presidency to Kimberly Fraser.
This year featured a “Meet the Woman in RI Media” panel of female journalists and personalities who shared their experiences as women in PR and media and offered insights and tips on how to get your story heard. Margaret O’Brien Reed, host of Rhode Island Capitol TV, moderated the panel, which included WPRI reporter Kim Kalunian, Rhode Island Monthly associate editor Casey Nilsson, Rhode Island Public Radio news director Elisabeth Harrison, and Providence Journal food editor Gail Ciampi. The PRSA honored Ciampi’s more than 35-year career by handing her the annual Media Achievement Award.
The panel discussed the nature of being a woman in the local news landscape as well as the pros and cons of a hyper-fast paced news media that does not always ensure accuracy. Ciampi noted that there has never been a more important time to be right in media. The panel delved into what makes a story newsworthy and how to pitch a story effectively with a unique angle. Harrison also discussed the importance of making meaningful contributions to the conversation in RI.
Thank you to the entire panel for their insightful dialogue and their dedication to the field of journalism and public relations!
